The School of Medical and Psychiatry started in 1990 by the Medical Social Services Department of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. It was observed that there was a deficiency in training with respect to the education of Medical and Psychiatry Social Workers in the country. In order to correct these deficiencies, the Medical Social Services Department designed a training programme with the main goal of developing skilled Medical and Psychiatric Social Workers throughout the Country. Accordingly, over the years the course objectives have been updated to reflect the evolving dynamics of human society and the importance for Social Workers to adapt to those changes. Our mission is to produce Medical & Psychiatric Social Workers, who Have in-depth knowledge and understanding of personal, cultural and social determinants that influence people’s health, are equipped with clinical skills, coupled with critical thinking skills, community engagement and advocacy skills to provide world class social services within a clinical setting.
