LUTH Joins the Global Community to Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week 2025

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Breastfeeding Week on Wednesday, August 7, 2025, with the global theme "Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Support System.


The event commenced with a walk of awareness within the Hospital premises, aimed at sensitizing the public on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for child survival and development.

The Chief Medical Director, Professor Wasiu Adeyemo (FAS), ably represented by the Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (DCMAC), Dr. Babawale Bello, who delivered the opening remarks. He emphasized LUTH’s commitment to promoting maternal and child health, in alignment with global health initiatives.

Speaking with the Press, Professor Ekanem Ekure, a Consultant at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and President of the Paediatric Association of Nigeria, underscored the critical role of breastfeeding in combating child malnutrition and mortality in Nigeria.

She highlighted that exclusive breastfeeding builds immunity, reduces the risk of infections, and supports cognitive development in children.

Also Professor Abiola Oduwole, a Consultant paediatrics at LUTH and College of Medicine, University of Lagos, who is also the chairperson for the breastfeeding Hospital initiative, LUTH (BFHI) described breastfeeding as a fundamental right of every child, and advocated for increased institutional and community support, including involvement of fathers and employers.

She also paid tribute to the late Prof. Edna Irona, whose efforts led to the institutionalization of BFHI in LUTH.

This year’s event focused on creating sustainable support systems for breastfeeding mothers both at home and in the workplace. Plans are underway to reintroduce the annual baby show and to take the awareness campaigns beyond LUTH to local communities around.
