The College of Nursing Sciences, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), on Friday, August 15, 2025, held its Capping and Strapping Ceremony for the 2025/2026 ND1 cohort. The event, themed “Called to Care and Built to Lead,” marked the students’ formal entry into the noble profession of nursing.
The Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Ayodeji Oluwole, congratulated the students and urged them to lead with integrity, compassion, and a strong conscience. Similarly, the Director of Administration, Ms. Omolola Fakeye (JP), encouraged them to stay focused, uphold excellence, and remain guided by the Provost’s counsel.
The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo (FAS), welcomed all dignitaries and acknowledged the immense role of parents and guardians, who received a standing ovation. He advised the students to maintain good conduct, embrace discipline, and devote themselves to diligent study.
Delivering the keynote address, Mrs. Olayinka Osuntogun highlighted the challenges nursing students may face, reminding them that they have been called to serve. She emphasized resilience, peer support, and the importance of empathy and compassion in nursing practice. She urged the students to uphold ethical standards, pursue lifelong learning, and seek guidance from their lecturers.
One of the most symbolic moments of the day was the Lighting of the Lamp ceremony, performed by an alumna who passed the light to the new students — a gesture symbolizing the transfer of knowledge, compassion, and commitment.
The climax of the event was the Capping and Strapping of the ND1 students, officially marking their entry into the nursing profession. With their pledge to uphold the responsibilities and ethical standards of nursing, the students embraced the challenge of care, leadership, and service to humanity.
