Prof. Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo Delivers Anniversary Lecture at University of Ibadan Dental School’s 50th Alumni Homecoming and Fundraising

The Faculty of Dentistry, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, on Monday, 22nd, September 2025 marked its 50th Anniversary Alumni Homecoming and Fundraising, at University College Hospital (UCH) bringing together alumni, academics, government officials, and stakeholders from across Nigeria.
The golden jubilee was marked by three major highlights: a fundraising drive to strengthen the Faculty’s infrastructure and training capacity, the conferment of the prestigious Fellowship of the International College of Dentists (FICD) award on distinguished alumni, and the Anniversary Lecture delivered by Prof. Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo, FAS, Chief Medical Director of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

Speaking on the theme, “My Root, Your Root: Honoring Our Educational Background,” Prof. Adeyemo reflected on the profound role of the University of Ibadan Dental School in shaping his professional journey and those of many others. Drawing on the metaphor of roots and environment, he likened the Faculty to a great tree whose strength and growth depend not only on its genetic foundation but also on the environment that nurtures it.
He emphasized that just as genetics provides the blueprint of life and epigenetics determines how that blueprint is expressed, so too do the founding principles of the Dental School — excellence, discipline, and service — continue to be shaped by the choices and contributions of alumni, leadership, and society.

Widely recognized as a leading voice in healthcare and academia, Prof. Adeyemo underscored the importance of honoring one’s alma mater, preserving its legacy, and giving back through mentorship, research, fundraising, and partnerships. He reminded alumni that education is never free — it is sustained by sacrifice — and that alumni support is vital to strengthen infrastructure, enhance training, and sustain innovation in dental education.
The event also featured goodwill messages from distinguished personalities, including the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, representatives of the University of Ibadan management, and senior alumni of the Dental School. They commended the Faculty’s remarkable contributions to dental practice and healthcare in Nigeria, while calling for renewed commitment to advancing its future.

The homecoming incorporated a fundraising drive, with alumni and partners pledging support to expand facilities, advance research, and create opportunities for the next generation of dental professionals.

The golden jubilee underscored the enduring impact of the University of Ibadan Dental School as a cradle of excellence, and reaffirmed the role of its alumni in shaping the future of dentistry and healthcare delivery in Nigeria and beyond.
For the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), the golden jubilee was not only a celebration of Prof. Adeyemo’s personal journey but also a reflection of the institution’s broader legacy. As he honored his roots at the University of Ibadan, Prof. Adeyemo simultaneously reaffirmed LUTH’s role as a beacon of excellence in healthcare, education, and research, a legacy that continues to shape lives across Nigeria and beyond.
