Courtesy Visit by Mark Fernandez, HM Consul to Nigeria, from the British Deputy High Commission, Lagos

The Chief Medical Director of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Professor Wasiu Adeyemo, warmly welcomed Mark Fernandez, HM Consul to Nigeria, and Eno Agodo, Vice Consul, Lagos, during their courtesy visit to the hospital on 2nd October, 2025.
Professor Adeyemo explained that LUTH is a publicly funded institution and serves as the Teaching Hospital affiliated with the University of Lagos (UNILAG), where a wide range of healthcare professionals are trained. He highlighted that LUTH also runs several specialized schools including the College of Nursing, School of Midwifery, School of Post-Basic Nursing, School of Community Health, School of Health Information Management, Federal School of Biomedical Engineering, Medical and Psychiatry Social Work, and Anaesthetic Technicians’ School.

He further noted that LUTH prides itself as the hospital with some of the most advanced facilities in the country, including the state-of-the-art Medserve LUTH Cancer Centre, the modern Alima Atta Oncology Ward, and the well equipped Oluwole Dada Dialysis Centre. In addition, LUTH houses a dedicated private ward for both inpatient and outpatient services, tailored for high-profile individuals who prefer to receive treatment within the institution. He added that the hospital has a formidable team of 230 consultants spanning all specialties.
While sharing the institution’s achievements, Professor Adeyemo also emphasized some of its challenges, notably the issues of unstable power supply and shortages in personnel.

In his remarks, HM Consul Mark Fernandez introduced himself and his colleague, Eno Agodo, stating that the British Deputy High Commission provides assistance to British nationals in distress, which may include both routine and crisis-related hospitalizations. As part of their crisis preparedness, he explained that they sought this visit to familiarize themselves with LUTH’s facilities and processes, understand access protocols, and assess how British nationals would be cared for in terms of safety, cleanliness, and quality of service.
Eno Agodo added that they would like to include LUTH on their list of recommended hospitals for British nationals in Nigeria and link LUTH’s official website to the list for easy reference and contact.

Also in attendance during the visit were key members of LUTH’s management team, including Ms. Omolola Fakeye, Director of Administration; Dr. Rufus Ojewola, DCMAC (Research and Training); and Mrs. Patricia Enwezor, Director of Corporate Services.

The CMD, alongside the LUTH management team, conducted a tour of the hospital premises, during which the delegation inspected key clinical and support facilities and gained first-hand impressions of the hospital’s infrastructure, service delivery, and patient-care environment..
The visit reinforced LUTH’s position as a leading tertiary hospital in Nigeria and opened avenues for collaboration with the British Deputy High Commission, particularly in ensuring the welfare of British nationals seeking care in the institution.
